This is a long shot but I am hoping to talk to a group of year 6's (namely 35 x 11 year olds) about South African food. As part of this I'd like them to get involved in cooking some yummy treats! I've found a few recipes that involve making coconut ice (easy is vital) and biscuits / cookies with apricot jam and coconut.
Any ideas would be fantastic!
TIA

Okay, so I decided to make a pan of apple crisp, since I wanted to do something with this package of pre-sliced granny smith apples we bought this weekend. It was extremely easy, since I used a packaged topping mix.
I peeled and cored the apple slices that still had a core (Motts did a pretty good job for me) and mixed the topping with 5 tbsp of butter like the package told me, but I added two handfuls of chopped walnuts and a bit of allspice and nutmeg to the apples (just to make it taste less... packaged). Baked at 375 for 25-30 minutes and TA-DA!
( pics under cut )
I wish I had vanilla ice cream. ;_;

Around holidays at work, people always bring in the most amazing baked treats for each other. But for the last 4 years, there's one goofy kid who's always left out. He can't have anything with dairy or soy in it, and no one yet has come across a recipe that wouldn't kill our little buddy. So I call upon you, genius goody-makers of this cummunity, help me satisfy my coworker's allergy-ridden sweet tooth without causing his untimely death!
Much love and appreciation :]

Hmmm...let's see. I could fill up this whole page with my answers. But I'll spare you guys the novel.
- Everyday Minerals. It all started here!
- MAC foundations! I'm sure that started here, too!
- Sana Pore Putty. Someone here had made a comment about this (sorry, can't remember who) and I just had to look it up and ended up buying it online.
- and my Hunter boots! I think it was just last year when someone had asked a question about rain boots and this brand was mentioned. Next thing you know...it was at my doorstep =D

One of my favorite shops in Hong Kong has opened a café at 48 Cameron Road, Tsimshatsui, Kowloon and I wish I could go. Jude, Jeroen, Cedric and Jay, you have to see this. And I want to eat those wings!!

Leftover whole roast chicken from the supermarket, with omeletted egg

And I can't believe some of the styles are sold out.

If your mobile phone is on Globe postpaid, it's time to enjoy meter-less calls with Globe's Superduo.
Imagine calling your friends on Globe or TM and not worrying about the time.
The other night I spoke to Jude on Globe for more than one hour until I got sleepy.
Now you no longer need to say "Do you have a landline?" if both of you are on Globe.
All you have to do is get Superduo.
If you're already subscribed to Duo, text DUO OFF to 8888 and wait for instructions to unsubscribe.
This will erase you current Duo bill of Php 399/month.
Then text SUPERDUO MM ON (for Metro Manila) to 8888 and wait for instructions.
Cost is only Php 499/month on top of your postpaid plan—only Php 100 more than Duo.
If you have neither text SUPERDUO INFO to 8888 for instructions.
Now watch how it works.
Globe Super Duo is the first and only mobile service that gives you unlimited INTER-network calls, from October 16 to December 31, 2009. That means unlimited calling from your Globe or TM cellphone to all your friends also on Globe or TM, PLUS your pals on landline networks too.
When can I avail of this offer? Is this a regular plan or a promotion?
You can start to avail of this offer starting October 16, 2009 (TBC). Initially this is being offered as a special promotion.
To amp things up, now you can call landline numbers in the same area as yours and call all Globe and TM cellphones nationwide. If you’re a Super Duo user in Cebu, you can call as many landlines in your area as you want, and even Globe and TM cellphones to boot.
Registering to Globe Super Duo is also super easy because you can do it quickly via text, and the service will be automatically activated on your phone. Talk on Creativity with Gilda Cordero-Fernando and other artists
November 14, Saturday
3-5 PM

Bridging the Arts and the Sciences
Be here when the arts and sciences walk and talk a common path. In a rare conversation, a panel of artists and scientists will explore with the audience what it means to be creative in their respective fields.
Do they both experience eureka moments? If they do, do these moments come with a big bang or lightly on tiptoe? In what measure is creativity genetic or nurtured? Is it absolutely essential that society support the artist and scientist so they can excel at what they do?
Maria Isabel Garcia, curator of The Mind Museum at Taguig, will mediate this risky rendezvous between artists and scientists.
Gilda Cordero-Fernando will conduct a creative exercise-join panel discussion. This activity caps the art exhibit Philippines, Oh My! Philippines of GCF.
The event is free of charge but reservations are required.
Please contact Leonore Casuga at 8160044 or email manage@silverlensphoto.com

I just received a whole bunch of not-so-fresh oranges and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for what I could bake with them. They're still good, just getting to the end of their freshness and I know I can't eat them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
It's been almost a week and a half since I made these, but I'm still ridiculously proud. It was my first time attempting puff pastry, and they turned out great!

I used to know this place so well. Been here so many times to see doctors, get confined, give birth and visit relatives.

My grandparents died here. I have so many memories in this place.
And now this is the first thing I see...
Sometimes I think maybe my grandfather is lurking around on the 9th floor.
I forgot the visit the 9th floor. I want to see if the chapel still looks the same. I want to see that room where the bigger masses are held.
Gee, this place has more ATMs than a mall....
I wanted to eat at Floating Island, and I'm glad it's still there, glad they renovated, but I didn't feel like eating.
Last night while somebody was bugging me, screaming bloody murder because I reprinted parts of Patricia Evangelista's column titled Jesus in Yellow I couldn't sleep thinking about Christian's forthcoming echocardiogram.
Only yesterday I took Christian to Dr. Butler finally for a checkup. He has an ear infection and an extra sound in his heart. Otherwise, she said he looked really good and healthy.
She ordered a 2D echo, and we were OK after that, but later that evening I started to get really nervous—and this troll kept leaving angry comments on my blog. The reader from Marikina was angry at my post, my readers, my furniture. I deleted and banned and she created another account, deleted, banned. And then another one left a comment, I am now assuming from a proxy server. This person had so much energy so late at night.
And then, I just shut the computer and spoke to Jude up to three in the morning.
I had not spoken to him in a month and we were catching up.
He took my mind off my worries just by listening and talking and I fell asleep somehow.
Twelve hours later, we were at the hospital.
This place has new elevators. I hope they have a separate lift for the patients. I so hated being wheeled in and out of the lifts on a bed or wheelchair where everyone could see and take pity on me. I don't like living in a "fishball".
After one hour of waiting, it was our turn.
We were lucky that the technician doing the 2D echo needed help, so a doctor came in and did the ultrasound.
After what seemed like an eternity of stress for me, she said Christian's heart was normal.

We had left the house at 2:15 PM and got home 6 hours later.
I am now home nursing a headache after eating a ton of food.
I still feel like crying from relief and I thank God for making baby normal.

Hey! Thanks for for all the input I got on making a shortbread crust on a pecan pie. And here's my results... oops...

Well, that didn't last long. I used a slightly non-standard recipe (which was gutsy since I've NEVER baked one before, of any kind. I'll give my notes from doing this one, too, for the next time I make it or you might make it, so you have a little easier time than I did.

One of my sister's pet peeves is when she sees worn-out leather pumps where the wearer's toes are practically embossed.
Imagine my shock when Mich came home from London wearing these shoes:

Vivienne Westwood

How about these embossed bags by Vlieger and Vandam?
Hindi puede sa airport

I almost flew to Hong Kong when I read that Natalia Brilli opened at On Pedder.
And then I found out how much they cost.
I love this passport case but it costs more than a roundtrip ticket to Hong Kong.

Wallets

and finally, the Nolex, to annoy your Rolex-loving frienemies. iWant!

Natalia Brilli says, "If you have to know the time, you also can’t afford it."
Ngek. In that case, I'll have this watch by Trimode, Bangkok. Only 590 baht.
